The old Jewish cemetery

The Old Jewish Cemetery in Česká Lípa (German: Böhmisch Leipa) in the Czech Republic is one of two Jewish cemeteries in the city: the New Jewish Cemetery , which was supposed to replace the old one in 1905, was liquidated in 1983.

history

The old Jewish cemetery was founded around 1479. In 1758 it was expanded and used until 1905, when the New Jewish Cemetery was laid out that year. During the Second World War, the Old Jewish Cemetery was destroyed by the National Socialists, and some of the tombstones were used for various construction work. Today you can find around 140 remaining tombstones , the oldest from 1682.

Particularly noticeable is a gravestone that looks like a black pointed pillar and marks the resting place of a rabbi and 31 other Jewish victims of a pogrom of 1745.

Between 1994 and 1999 the cemetery was extensively reconstructed.
