A main line ( Latin magis , “big”, “most”) is the main traffic route of a region, a city, a country or an area comprising several states.

For example, the Dresden - Nuremberg route is known as the “ Saxony-Franconia Magistrale ” in rail traffic . In Croatia the coastal road is called the “ Adriatic Magistrale” ( CroatianJadranska Magistrala ”).

The term often refers to international connections, such as the summary of the road layout of national motorways or international rail connections . The trunk road from the French to the Ukrainian capital is known as the “Magistrale Paris - Kiev ”, the railway line from Paris to Budapest and Bratislava as the “ Magistrale for Europe ”.

In Lithuania , Belarus and Bulgaria , “Magistrale” is the official name for the highest road category or highways .

The street name An der Magistrale in Halle-Neustadt is an example of a main road within a socialist planned city .
