Francesco Magistrale (* 1945 in Bitetto ; † February 14, 2011 ) was an Italian diplomat .

He graduated from the University of Bari in 1968 with the laurea in Lettere with Guglielmo Cavallo . After that he was an assistant in Bari until 1982, but had lectureships in palaeography and diplomatics at the universities of Cosenza and Lecce . In 1982 he became professore associato and in 1986 full professor for these disciplines. In 1993 he took over the chair for Latin palaeography, and in 1998 a teaching position for Greek palaeography was added.

With Mario Capasso , he founded the codicological-palaeographic magazine Scripta in 2008 . An International Journal of Codicology and Palaeography . He was a member of the Commission Internationale de Diplomatique and temporarily President of the Associazione Italiana dei Paleografi e Diplomatisti (AIPD) .

He has rendered services to the development of smaller archive holdings to supplement the Codice diplomatico Pugliese , such as Terlizzi and Bitritto and the cathedral archive of Taranto . His main work is the investigation of the Terra di Bari as a document landscape from the 9th to the 11th century, in which in the last decades of Byzantine rule a stronger presence of Greek elements in the Latin document system can be observed, such as Magistral's analysis of formulas, writing and Legal content shows. Various studies were devoted to the Lombard culture of writing and its manifestation in the Beneventana . He also worked on the Chartae Latinae Antiquiores not only for the south of Italy.
