Guglielmo Cavallo
Guglielmo Cavallo (born August 18, 1938 in Carovigno ) is an Italian paleographer .
biography
After graduating from the University of Bari with Alessandro Pratesi in 1961, he initially taught palaeography and diplomatics in Bari, in 1975 he was appointed to the Scuola Speciale per Archivisti e Bibliotecari in Rome for Latin palaeography , and in 1978 he took over the chair for Greek palaeography at the Sapienza . His research focuses on the tradition of classical authors, as well as the mutual influences of different writing systems in the mixed-language areas in southern Italy. One example of this are the Exultet roles .
With Giovanna Nicolaj , he founded a second series of the Chartae Latinae Antiquiores , which are supposed to present documents from the ninth century, initially from Italian archives. The series begins with Volume 50, which was published in 1997 and contains documents from the archives of the Cava de 'Tirreni Abbey (three volumes in total). More extensive holdings come from the State Archives of Siena (3 volumes), Piacenza (8 volumes) and the archbishopric archives of Lucca (11 volumes). Volumes 100–109, published between 2006 and 2016, contain documents from the St. Gallen Abbey Archives.
Since 2002 Cavallo socio nazionale of the Accademia dei Lincei , where he is also a member of the commission for the national edition of the Greek and Latin classics. The Accademia delle Scienze di Torino he belongs since 1996 as a corresponding member. He is also a member of the Comité International de Paléographie Grecque (CIPG) and the Comité international de Paléographie latine (CIPL). He is also an honorary member of the Società di Storia Patria per la Puglia .
In 1995 he was awarded the Medaglia d'oro ai benemeriti della cultura e dell'arte , and in 1999 he was appointed Ufficiale of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic .
