Carovigno (in antiquity Carbina ) is an Italian municipality in the province of Brindisi in Apulia on the Salentine peninsula with 17,213 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). Torre Santa Sabina also belongs to the municipality.
The municipality of Carovigno also includes the seaside resorts of Torre Santa Sabina, Specchiolla , Torre Guaceto and Pantanagianni, as well as the hamlet of Serranova.
etymology
The name, when trying to translate it from Italian, means something like "expensive vineyards".
It was called Carbrun until the century before last. An old villa on the way towards San Vito dei Normanni dates from this period. A hotel with the name Carbrun still attests to the old name.
A note from Clearchus of Soloi mentions a Carbina (Κάρβινα) as a city of the Messapians . Finds of inscriptions in the Messapic dialect near Carovigno also indicate that the city was founded in antiquity.
