San Michele Salentino developed from the Masseria Nova estate , which was founded at the end of the 18th century. In 1861 the place had a population of about 850 inhabitants, which grew rapidly. In 1901 there were already over 2500 inhabitants. In this year the place gained independence as a parish. In 1913, after violent protests by the population, the place was granted partial autonomy, in 1928 it became independent as a political municipality from San Vito dei Normanni .

In the economy today agriculture still plays an important role alongside tourism.
