Oria is a town with 14,950 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the Italian province of Brindisi , Apulia region . It is the seat of the diocese of Oria .

location

Oria is halfway between Brindisi and Taranto on the ancient Via Appia . The place is at an altitude of 83  m slm. The area of ​​the municipality covers 83 km² .

history

The city was founded in antiquity by the Messapians who probably immigrated from Illyria and is called Hyria by Herodotus . According to Herodotus, however, the Messapians originally came from Crete.

In 1725, Francesco Milizia , a classicist writer, was born in the town.

Oria is a twin town of Lorch in Baden-Württemberg due to its Hohenstaufen past .

Personalities

  • Giovanni Bernardino Bonifacio (1517–1597), Marchese (Count) of Oria, humanist, book collector, librarian, supporter of the Reformation and as such chose to exile in Basel, later in Danzig, where he founded the first core of the local library.
