The Cathedral of Oria or the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption ( Italian Basilica Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta ) is a church in Oria , Apulia, southern Italy . The cathedral of the diocese of Oria is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and has the rank of minor basilica .

history

In 1226 Archbishop Peregrine I exchanged the land on the top of the old citadel of Oria, on which the cathedral was to be built, with Emperor Frederick II for the area on which he wanted the castle to be built. The Romanesque cathedral built at that time was later weakened by the openings in the surrounding walls for the new baroque chapels and then badly damaged by the devastating earthquake of 1743. In 1750, Bishop Castrese Scaja had the building demolished and began with the new baroque building according to plans by Giustino Lombardi based on St. Peter's Basilica . The new cathedral was consecrated for worship in 1756 by Bishop De Los Rejes. In 1992 it was given the rank of basilica minor by Pope John Paul II .

Building

The cathedral has the shape of a three-aisled basilica on the plan of a Latin cross , the side aisles are divided by round arches on two twin pillars that support the vaults. The transept does not protrude beyond the aisles, from which three side chapels lead off. The large rectangular choir is flanked by large chapels. The crossing dome rises on a drum and is clad on the outside with polychrome majolica tiles. Crypts with the graves of bishops and ossuaries were discovered during restorations; today the cathedral museum is housed here. The facade was built from the regional limestone and is decorated with baroque decorations. On the left side the clock tower and behind it the bell tower were built.

Furnishing

The church furnishings include the multi-colored marble altar with the large altarpiece of the Assumption , which was created in 2005 on the occasion of the bishop's election. The cathedral is richly decorated with valuable stucco work and statues by well-known artists, such as B. that of the Santi Medici from the Venetian school. In the cathedral are the relics of Barsanuphius of Palestine.
