history

Finds show that the area around Cisternino was inhabited as early as the Paleolithic . The city itself is believed to have been founded by the Messapians who lived in Salento before the Greeks and Romans . Even before the Punic Wars , the city came under Roman rule under the name Sturnimum .

The name Cisturninum appears for the first time in 1180 in a bull of Pope Alexander III. to the Bishop of Monopoli . The following centuries ran parallel to the history of Apulia and the Kingdom of Naples . They brought constantly changing, usually foreign rulers with them, including the Normans (11th – 12th centuries), the Hohenstaufen (12th – 13th centuries), the Anjou (13th – 15th centuries) and Aragón ( 15th - early 18th century), the Habsburgs (18th century) and - with a Napoleonic interruption - the Bourbons (18th - 19th centuries). In the course of the Italian struggle for freedom in 1861 with the establishment of the Kingdom of Italy, foreign rule was shaken off after many centuries.
