William Smathers

William Howell Smathers (born January 7, 1891 in Waynesville , North Carolina , † September 24, 1955 there ) was an American politician . From 1937 to 1943 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US Senate .

Early years

George Smathers was born on a plantation near the town of Waynesville in Haywood County . He attended public school and then Washington and Lee University in Lexington , Virginia . He graduated from the University of North Carolina Law School at Chapel Hill in 1911 and was admitted to the bar a year later. He practiced law in Atlantic City .

Career

Smathers was a judge in Atlantic City from 1922 to 1932, and then first assistant to the New Jersey Attorney General from 1934 to 1936 . In 1935 he was a member of the New Jersey Senate . In 1936 he was elected as a Democrat to the US Senate, his term of office began on January 3, 1937. However, he was not sworn in until April 15, 1937. In the next election, six years later, Smathers was not re-elected and therefore left the Senate on January 3, 1943. He then continued his practice as a lawyer in Atlantic City until his retirement. He then returned to Waynesville and finally died there on September 24, 1955. He was buried in Green Hill Cemetery in Waynesville.
