Theodore Fitz Randolph

Theodore Fitz Randolph (born June 24, 1826 in Mansfield , Tioga County , Pennsylvania , †  November 7, 1883 in Morristown , New Jersey ) was an American politician and governor of the state of New Jersey from 1869 to 1872 . Between 1875 and 1881 he represented his state in the US Senate .

Early years and political advancement

Theodore Randolph came to New Brunswick , New Jersey at an early age , where he attended public schools. Then he became involved in the coal and iron business. Between 1840 and 1852 he lived in Vicksburg in the state of Mississippi , where he went about his business. After returning to New Jersey, he worked in the mining and transportation of ores. Soon he also became president of the Morris and Essex Railroad .

Randolph was a member of the Democratic Party . In 1859 he was elected to the New Jersey General Assembly and served on the State Senate between 1862 and 1863 . Randolph also helped found the State comptroller of New Jersey in 1865 . In 1868 he was elected as his party's candidate for governor of his state.

Governor and US Senator

Theodore Randolph took office as governor on January 19, 1869. During his three-year term in office, prison reform was carried out and a law against election bribery was passed. A new mental hospital was being built in Morristown. A monopoly tax imposed on the railroad was abolished. After the end of his tenure on January 16, 1872, Randolph continued his political career. Between March 4, 1875 and March 3, 1881, he was a Class 1 Senator member of the US Congress . There he succeeded John P. Stockton . Randolph served a term in the US Senate during which he was chairman of the military committee. After resigning from this body, William Joyce Sewell took over his Senate seat from the Republican Party .

After his time in Washington, DC ended , Randolph retired from politics. He died in November 1883 and was buried in Morristown. Randolph was also known as an inventor. So he invented a punch machine and a steam typewriter.
