history
Vicksburg was founded in 1811 and recognized as a city on January 29, 1825. The place grew rapidly and soon became a center of trade, agriculture, and traffic on the Mississippi.
During the American Civil War , the city was of great importance due to the branch of the Mississippi Central Railroad that ran west over the Mississippi and the dominant location on the Mississippi. On May 22, 1863, the city was attacked by Union troops. On July 4th she surrendered to General Grant , who thus rose to become the new war hero of the north (→ Battle of Vicksburg ). The northern fleet thus dominated the Mississippi and was able to organize and carry out supplies to the south unhindered.
