Delbert Hosemann Jr. (Born June 30, 1947 in Vicksburg , Mississippi ) is an American Republican politician . He has been Vice Governor of Mississippi since 2020 ; he had previously served as Secretary of State in that state since 2008 .

Family, education and work

Hosemann grew up in Warren County, Mississippi and received his Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend , Indiana in 1969 . In 1972 he did his Juris Doctor at the University of Mississippi . In 1973 he obtained an additional degree in tax law ( Master of Laws ) from New York University . He lives in Jackson , the capital of the state, and was a partner in the law firm Phelps Dunbar LLP until he entered politics. For 18 years in a row he was voted one of the best lawyers in America. He is also in the real estate business and owns a number of properties in his hometown.

Delbert Hosemann is married to Lynn L. Hosemann. You have three children. Hosemann is a reservist in the United States Army and in his spare time a hunter and marathon runner ( New York , Boston ). He has represented Mississippi at the national Senior Olympics and is a member of the National Rifle Association and various associations such as the Delta Wildlife Foundation and the Mississippi Wildlife Federation . He has served in various honorary positions and was recognized by the United States Department of Justice in 2006 with the George L. Phillips Community Service Award for his contribution to Project Safe Neighborhoods and helping those affected by Hurricane Katrina .

Political career

Hosemann, who had previously been temporarily registered as a Democrat, ran in the 1998 election as a Republican for the seat in the House of Representatives of the United States , which had been held by his party friend Michael Parker . However, after he had reached the nomination of his party with difficulty in June 1998, Hosemann was defeated in the main election in November by the Democrat Ronnie Shows . In 2000, Hosemann was an electoral member of the Electoral College for the presidential election , which elected George W. Bush as President and Dick Cheney as Vice President.

On November 6, 2007, Hosemann was elected Secretary of State Mississippi against Democrat Robert Smith , took office in January 2008 and was re-elected in 2011 and 2015. In July 2017, Hosemann hit the headlines when he failed to comply with a request from Donald Trump 's election fraud investigation to hand over all of the state's electoral rolls since 2006. He said the commission should jump into the Gulf of Mexico , but he would protect the privacy of the residents and shield the electoral process within the state.

In March 2018, Hosemann was in discussion as a possible successor to the outgoing US Senator Thad Cochran . He was considered one of Governor Phil Bryant's favorites for the temporary occupation of the mandate after Cochran's early withdrawal on April 1, 2018 until the extraordinary by-election in November. The governor ultimately chose Cindy Hyde-Smith .

In November 2019, he was elected as running mate of the previous Lieutenant Governor of Mississippi, Tate Reeves , who in turn succeeded Governor Bryant, as his deputy.
