Career

There are hardly any usable sources about Alexander Davis. He was an African American who became politically active as a member of the Republican Party during the Reconstruction in Mississippi after the Civil War . He lived in Noxubee County . In 1870 he was elected lieutenant governor of Mississippi alongside Ridgley C. Powers . He held this office between 1871 and 1876. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . From 1874 he served under Governor Adelbert Ames .

The political situation in Mississippi was very unstable in those years. At times there were violent clashes between the conservative forces and the republican state government supported by the military administration. When the conservative side, which was politically represented by the Democratic Party , gained a majority in the state legislature at the end of the reconstruction period, politically motivated impeachment proceedings against their political opponents ensued. Governor Ames and Lieutenant Governor Davis were killed in this process in 1876. After serving as Lieutenant Governor, Alexander Davis ran a saloon in Noxubee County that was open to all races. Nothing is known about his further life.
