Evelyn Gandy

Edythe Evelyn Gandy (born September 4, 1920 in Hattiesburg , Mississippi ; †  December 23, 2007 there ) was an American politician . Between 1976 and 1980 she was lieutenant governor of the state of Mississippi.

Career

Evelyn Gandy graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi . After a subsequent law degree at the University of Mississippi and her admission as a lawyer in 1943, she began to work in this profession. She was the first woman ever to publish the Mississippi Law Journal . Until 1947 she was on the staff of the former governor and then US Senator Theodore G. Bilbo . Politically, like Bilbo, she belonged to the Democratic Party . In 1947 she was elected to the Mississippi House of Representatives; In 1959 she was assistant attorney general of her state as Assistant Attorney General . Between 1960 and 1964 and again from 1968 to 1972 she was State Treasurer Treasury Secretary of Mississippi. After that she was the State Government's Insurance Commissioner.

In 1975, Gandy was elected Lieutenant Governor of Mississippi, alongside Cliff Finch . She held this office between 1976 and 1980. She was Deputy Governor and Chairwoman of the State Senate . She was the first woman to hold this post in the state of Mississippi. In 1979 and 1983 she failed her party's gubernatorial elections. After serving as lieutenant governor, she returned to practice as a lawyer. She died after a long illness on December 23, 2007 in her hometown of Hattiesburg.
