Mississippi Senate
The Mississippi State Senate ( Mississippi State Senate ) is the upper house of the Mississippi Legislature , the Legislature of the State of Mississippi .
The Chamber of Parliament is composed of 52 senators, each representing an electoral district. Each of these fixed units has an average of 54,704 inhabitants (as of 2000). The senators are each elected for four-year terms; there is no limit to the terms of office. The Senate boardroom, along with the House of Representatives, is located in the Mississippi State Capitol in the capital Jackson .
Tasks of the Senate
As in the upper houses of other states and territories and in the US Senate , the Mississippi Senate has special tasks compared to the House of Representatives that go beyond legislation. It is the responsibility of the Senate to confirm or reject nominations by the governor in his cabinet, other executive offices, commissions and authorities.
Mississippi Constitution
Under the current Mississippi Constitution of 1890, the Senate should not have more than 52 MPs, elected for four-year terms. The Senate elections are due to take place during the parliamentary elections on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November.
Structure of the chamber
The President of the Senate is the incumbent lieutenant governor of Mississippi. He only takes part in votes in order to bring about a decision in the event of a stalemate. In the absence of the Vice-Governor, the respective President presides over the plenary sessions pro tempore . This is elected by the majority parliamentary group in the Senate and later confirmed by the Chamber. Compared to other lower houses, the powers of the president are limited pro tempore . The vice-governor alone has the authority to appoint the chairmen and their deputies to the various Senate committees, regardless of the size of the party. The current Vice-Governor and Senate President is Republican Phil Bryant , President pro tempore is Republican William Gardner Hewes .
Other important incumbents are the majority leader and the opposition leader ( minority leader ), who are elected by the respective party meetings.
