The Nevada Assembly is the lower house of the Nevada Legislature , the legislature of the US state of Nevada . The parliamentary chamber consists of 42 members, each representing an electoral district. Each of these fixed units has an average population of 47,400 (as of 2000), although the 2006 Census Bureau estimated an average population of 59,400 per district. The MPs are each elected for two-year terms. The term of office is limited to six terms (12 years). The first consequences were noticeable in 2010, when twelve MPs had to leave the assembly.

The Assembly can expel members for serious misconduct by a two-thirds majority , the first time it made use of it in 2013 against Steven Brooks .

The Assembly met in the Nevada State Capitol in the capital Carson City until 1971 ; since then they have been using the newly constructed legislature building in the immediate vicinity. As in neighboring California , the lower house of the legislature is referred to as an "assembly" and not, as usual, as a "house of representatives".

Gatherings

The Assembly, like the Senate , is made up of MPs who receive a relatively small daily rate as compensation for the first 60 days of a given session . In addition, the Assembly and the Senate meet for a maximum of 120 days, starting with the first Monday in February of every odd year. However, this short period does not meet today's requirements for a parliament, which is why it is regularly extended.

Structure of the chamber

The Chairman of the Chamber is the Speaker of the Assembly . He is first elected by the majority parliamentary group in the chamber before confirmation by the entire parliament follows. The speaker is also responsible for the legislative process and oversees the assignments to the various committees.

Other important office holders are the majority leader and the opposition leader ( minority leader ), who are elected by the respective parliamentary groups.
