The House of Representatives from Delaware ( Delaware House of Representatives ) is the lower house of the Delaware General Assembly , the legislature of the US state of Delaware .

The Chamber of Parliament is made up of 41 members, each representing an electoral district. The MPs are each elected for two-year terms; there is no limit to the terms of office.

The House of Representatives boardroom, along with the State Senate, is located in the Delaware State Capitol in the capital, Dover .

history

The Chamber of Parliament was known as the House of Assembly from 1776 to 1792 . It was a common name for the lower houses of the colonial legislatures and later states that came together under the Articles of Confederation . As a result of the state constitution of 1792, the name was changed, which was done in line with the new House of Representatives of the United States . Delaware was the first state to ratify the US Constitution in 1787 . With its renaming, a process began that ended with the division of the US state legislature into upper and lower houses, as well as the adoption of the same name.

Structure of the chamber

The Speaker of the House is the Chairman of the House of Representatives . He is first elected by the majority parliamentary group in the chamber before confirmation by the entire parliament follows. The speaker is also responsible for the legislative process and oversees the assignments to the various committees. The current speaker is the Democrat Robert F. Gilligan .

Other important office holders are the majority leader and the opposition leader ( minority leader ), who are elected by the respective parliamentary groups. The majority leader decides which bills are to be discussed on the speaker's agenda. He also leads the debates and the chamber votes. Conditions of admission to the chamber

Each member of the House of Representatives must be a citizen of the United States and have lived in Delaware for at least three years. Furthermore, one must have lived in the constituency for at least one year before being elected and be at least 24 years old when elected.
