The Senate of Pennsylvania ( Pennsylvania State Senate ) is the upper house of the Pennsylvania General Assembly , the legislature of the US state of Pennsylvania .

The Chamber of Parliament is composed of 50 senators, each representing an electoral district. Each of these fixed units has an average of 245,621 inhabitants (as of 2002). The senators are each elected for four-year terms. Furthermore, these terms of office are staggered so that half of the senators are re-elected every two years. The Senate boardroom, along with the House of Representatives, is located in the Pennsylvania State Capitol in the capital Harrisburg .

Tasks of the Senate

As in the upper houses of other states and territories as well as in the US Senate , the Senate of Pennsylvania has special tasks compared to the House of Representatives that go beyond legislation. It is the responsibility of the Senate to confirm or reject nominations by the governor in his cabinet, other executive offices, commissions and authorities.

Structure of the chamber

The President of the Senate is the acting Vice-Governor . He only takes part in votes in order to bring about a decision in the event of a stalemate. In the absence of the Vice-Governor, the respective President presides over the plenary sessions pro tempore . This is elected by the majority parliamentary group in the Senate and later confirmed by the Chamber. The current Lieutenant Governor and Senate President is Republican Jim Cawley , President pro tempore of Republicans Joseph B. Scarnati of the 25th constituency ( Cameron , Clearfield , Elk , Jefferson , McKean , Potter , Tioga , Warren ). Other important office holders are the majority leader and the opposition leader ( minority leader ), who are elected by the respective parliamentary groups. Majority leader of the Republicans is Dominic F. Pileggi , as minority leader of the Democrats Jay Costa acts .
