The New Jersey Senate (New Jersey State Senate) is the upper house of the New Jersey Legislature , the Legislature of the State of New Jersey .

The Chamber of Parliament is composed of 40 senators, each representing an electoral district. Each of these fixed units comprises an average of 210,359 inhabitants (as of 2000). The senators are each elected in a "2-4-4" cycle that has been introduced to respond to changes in the district boundaries. The basis for this are the figures determined by the United States Census , which are determined every decade (10 years) and show the actual population development in the districts. If this cycle did not exist, there would be no relatively fair representation, since one would simply work with outdated figures. With a varying term of office, the district boundaries are only two years old. Senate elections take place every year that ends with a “1”, “3” or “7” (e.g. 2011, 2013 and 2017 in this decade).

The Senate boardroom, along with the Assembly, is located in the New Jersey State House in the capital, Trenton .

Within a term of office, new seats can only be allocated if a vacant seat is to be filled by a county committee or party committee. In the subsequent parliamentary election, the seat concerned is included on the voting slip, unless the vacancy does not appear until 51 days before the election. Then the appointment stands until the next parliamentary election.
