The Kansas Senate ( Kansas State Senate ) is the upper house of the Kansas Legislature , the Legislature of the State of Kansas .

The Chamber of Parliament is composed of 40 senators, each representing an electoral district. Each of these fixed units comprises an average of 60,000 inhabitants. The senators are each elected for four-year terms; there is no limit to the terms of office. The Senate boardroom, along with the House of Representatives, is located in the Kansas State Capitol in the capital, Topeka .

Tasks of the Senate

As in the upper houses of other states and territories, as well as in the US Senate , the Kansas Senate has special tasks compared to the House of Representatives that go beyond legislation. It is the responsibility of the Senate to confirm or reject nominations by the governor in his cabinet, other executive offices, commissions and authorities.

Structure of the chamber

The President of the Senate is the head of the Chamber of Parliament. He is a member of the Organization, Calendar and Rules Committee , which appoints MPs to all Senate and Joint Committees . If necessary, it can also create other committees and sub-committees. Unlike other states, the Lieutenant Governor of Kansas is not the head of the Senate. Since a 1972 amendment to the Kansas Constitution, the duties of the lieutenant governor have changed. Today he serves in other areas of state government, such as the military affairs and health insurance committees. In the absence of the Senate President, the Vice President presides over the Senate. The President of the Senate forwards possible bills to the committees and the Majority Leader then determines the calendar day and orders the discussion in the Senate Chamber. The Organization, Rules and Calendar Committee consists of the President, Vice President, Majority Leader, Assistant Majority Leader, Minority Leader and four senators elected by the majority parliamentary group.

Current Senate President is Republican Stephen Morris , 39th constituency ( Garden City and Ulysses ).

The Republican Jay Emler , 35th constituency ( McPherson and Ellsworth ), was elected as the majority leader ; Opposition leader ( minority leader ) is the Democrat Anthony Hensley , 19th constituency ( Topeka , Burlingame and Osage City ).
