The Illinois Senate ( Illinois State Senate ) is the upper house of the Illinois General Assembly , the legislature of the US state of Illinois . The Chamber was created in 1818 following the adoption of the first Illinois Constitution.

The Chamber of Parliament consists of 59 senators, each representing an electoral district. In order to avoid the complete exchange of senators at once, in 1970 the state constitution of Illinois divided the senators into three groups. Each group has a two-year term within a different part of the decade between censuses , with two four-year terms for the remainder of the decade. In contrast, the Illinois House of Representatives, with its 118 members, is elected for two-year terms. The electoral districts of the representatives were formed by halving the senate electoral districts. There is no term limit.

The Senate boardroom, along with the House of Representatives, is located in the Illinois State Capitol in the capital, Springfield . The first official working day of each year is the second Wednesday in January.

Tasks of the Senate

As in the upper houses of other states and territories as well as in the US Senate , the Illinois Senate has special tasks compared to the House of Representatives that go beyond legislation. It is up to the Senate to pass bills, approve the state budget, and confirm or reject nominations to state institutes and authorities. It is also up to the Senate to influence federal constitutional amendments, as well as to propose those for Illinois. It also has the power to overturn appeals from the governor by a three-fifths majority. In addition, the Illinois Senate is seeking the indictments made by the House of Representatives. As a result, officials can find it guilty by a two-thirds majority.

Voting

Votes in the Illinois Senate take place by pressing one of three buttons. Unlike other states, the Illinois Senate allows MPs to choose between “yes”, “no” or “contain”. It requires 30 yes votes to pass a law in the final vote. The number of negative votes does not matter. Hence, using “contain” has the same effect as choosing “no”.

Structure of the chamber

The President of the Senate is not the lieutenant governor , as is usual in most other US states , but an elected member of the Senate. Current Senate President is Democrat John Cullerton , 6th constituency ( Chicago ).

For majority leader ( Majority leader ) Democratic was James Clayborne , 57. constituency ( Belleville ) selected; Opposition leader ( minority leader ) is the Republican Christine Radogno , 41st constituency ( Lemont ).
