The Virginia General Assembly is the legislature of the American state Virginia .

history

The Virginia General Assembly is the oldest legislative body in the Western Hemisphere. It goes back to 1619 when the House of Burgesses was founded at Jamestown . The assemblies took place here from 1619 to 1699. Then they met in Williamsburg , Virginia at the Capitol. With the ratification of the Virginia Constitution in 1776, it became the general legislative assembly. Governor Thomas Jefferson moved to Richmond in 1780 .

The Assembly consists of two chambers , the House of Representatives ( Lower House ) and the Senate ( Upper House ). The seat of parliament is the capital Richmond.
