The Senate of New Mexico ( New Mexico State Senate ) is the upper house of the New Mexico Legislature , the legislature of the US state of New Mexico .

The Chamber of Parliament consists of 42 senators, each representing an electoral district. Each of these fixed units has an average of 43,300 inhabitants. The senators are each elected for four-year terms. The Senate boardroom, along with the House of Representatives, is located in the New Mexico State Capitol in the capital, Santa Fe .

Tasks of the Senate

As in the upper houses of other states and territories as well as in the US Senate , the New Mexico Senate has special tasks compared to the House of Representatives that go beyond legislation. It is the responsibility of the Senate to confirm or reject nominations by the governor in his cabinet, other executive offices, commissions and authorities.

Structure of the chamber

The President of the Senate is the acting Vice-Governor . He only takes part in votes in order to bring about a decision in the event of a stalemate. In the absence of the Vice-Governor, the respective President presides over the plenary sessions pro tempore . This is elected by the majority parliamentary group in the Senate and later confirmed by the Chamber. Current vice governor and Senate president is the Republican John Sanchez , president pro tempore of the Democrat Timothy Jennings from the 32nd constituency.

For majority leader ( Majority leader ) of the Democrats was Michael Sanchez , 29 constituency chosen; Opposition leader ( minority leader ) is the Republican Stuart Ingle from the 27th constituency.
