The Tennessee House of Representatives ( Tennessee House of Representatives ) is the lower house of the Tennessee General Assembly , the legislature of the US state of Tennessee .

According to the Tennessee Constitution of 1870, the House of Representatives consists of 99 members, each representing an electoral district . The MPs are elected for two-year terms in the even-numbered years. Elections will be held concurrently with those for the US House of Representatives and other offices. The primary takes place on the first Tuesday in August. Seats vacated by the death or resignation of an MP are filled by the county committee (or Metropolitan County Council ) of the member's home county. A by-election only takes place if the remaining term of office is longer than one year.

The boardroom is shared with the State Senate in the Tennessee State Capitol in the capital Nashville .

Structure of the chamber

Speaker Beth Harwell

The Chairman is the Speaker of the House . He is first elected by the majority parliamentary group in the chamber before confirmation by the entire parliament follows. The speaker is also responsible for the legislative process and oversees the assignments to the various committees. The current incumbent is Beth Harwell of Nashville, a Republican MP from the 56th electoral district. In addition, a Speaker Pro Tempore will be elected by the House of Representatives who will only hold the chair during the speaker's absence. The current Speaker Pro Tempore is the Republican Judd Matheny from the 47th electoral district.

Other important office holders are the majority leader and the opposition leader ( minority leader ), who are elected by the respective parliamentary groups. The Republican majority faction is currently led by Gerald McCormick from Hamilton County's 26th electoral district, while the Democratic minority leader is Craig Fitzhugh from 82nd electoral district.
