South Dakota House of Representatives
The South Dakota House of Representatives ( South Dakota House of Representatives ) is the lower house of the South Dakota State Legislature , the Legislature of the State of South Dakota .
The parliamentary chamber consists of 70 members, with two members representing each electoral district . A specialty in South Dakota are two of the 35 legislative districts, namely Districts 26 and 28. Each of these is divided into two separate sub-districts, i. H. District 26 in 26A and 26B, and District 28 in 28A and 28B. One member of each of these sub-districts is appointed to the Chamber of Parliament.
The House of Representatives boardroom, along with the State Senate, is located in the South Dakota State Capitol in the capital, Pierre .
Structure of the chamber
The Speaker of the House is the Chairman of the House of Representatives . He is first elected by the majority parliamentary group in the chamber before confirmation by the entire parliament follows. The speaker is also responsible for the legislative process and oversees the assignments to the various committees. The current speaker is Val Rausch from Big Stone City , a Republican MP from the 4th electoral district. In contrast to other states, there is a convention in South Dakota that limits the term of office of a speaker to a single term.
Furthermore, a Speaker Pro Tempore is elected by the House of Representatives to preside over it only when the Speaker is absent. He is traditionally the successor to the speaker in the next chamber of parliament. The current Speaker Pro Tempore is Republican Brian Gosch from Rapid City , 32nd electoral district.
Other important office holders are the majority leader and the opposition leader ( minority leader ), who are elected by the respective parliamentary groups. The Republican majority faction is currently led by David Lust from Rapid City, 29th electoral district, while the Democratic minority leader is Bernie Hunhoff from Yankton , 18th electoral district.
In addition, a number of whips are selected by each party to support the floor leaders in the appropriate group meetings.
