The South Dakota State Legislature (dt. State Legislature of South Dakota ) is the parliament of the US state South Dakota . The parliament is a bicameral parliament , consisting of a house of representatives with 70 members and a senate with 35 senators, who are elected by majority voting. South Dakota is divided into 35 constituencies of roughly the same size, each of which has a senator and two representatives elected.

Both chambers are similar in most respects; however, only the Senate has the right to approve the governor's appointments. Furthermore, the House of Representatives has an electronic voting system, while the Senate has roll-call voting.

The legislature meets in the Capitol in Pierre . It begins its annual session on the second Tuesday of each year. The meetings last 40 working days in uneven years and 35 working days in even years. The legislature elects a board of directors from among its members, which handles administrative matters when the legislature is not in session.

choice

Members of both chambers of the state legislature are elected for two years in November of an even year at the same time as the federal elections. Since 1992, legislators have not been allowed to be members of the same chamber for more than four consecutive terms.

Legislators are elected in 35 constituencies; each district sends a senator and two representatives. In 33 districts the legislators are elected by majority vote in the entire constituency. Only District 26 and 28 are divided into two House Districts, each of which elects a representative so that the Indians are more appropriately represented in Parliament.

The borders of the electoral districts are drawn every 10 years - most recently in 2001 - after the census . Each district has around 21,500 residents. As a result of a 2005 court case, the constituencies in southwest South Dakota must be changed. District 26 was - similar to District 28 - divided into two House districts.
