Matt Michels (* 1960 in Pierre , South Dakota ) is an American politician . From 2011 to 2019 he was lieutenant governor of the state of South Dakota.

Career

Matt Michels studied health administration at the University of South Dakota through 1982 . After completing a law degree at the same university and being admitted to the bar in 1985, he began to work in this profession. He was now a member of the Judge Advocate General's Corps of the United States Navy . Politically, he joined the Republican Party . Between 1998 and 2006 he was a member of the South Dakota House of Representatives , whose speaker he had been since 2003.

In 2010, Michels was elected Lieutenant Governor of South Dakota alongside Dennis Daugaard . He has held this office since 2011. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . In 2014 he was confirmed in office. The next election took place in 2018, where he was no longer a candidate.
