Clarence E. Coyne

Clarence E. Coyne (born December 23, 1881 in Rock Island , Illinois , †  May 27, 1929 ) was an American politician . In 1929 he was lieutenant governor of the state of South Dakota .

Career

Clarence Coyne attended public schools in his home country. He then graduated from high school and business college. For four years he served in the Naval Militia of the State of Illinois. In 1905 he came to South Dakota. He worked in the newspaper industry at Fort Pierre , Stanley County . Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party . Between 1911 and 1914 he served as a sheriff in Stanley County; from 1922 to 1927 he held the office of Secretary of State of South Dakota.

In 1928, Coyne was elected Lieutenant Governor of South Dakota alongside William J. Bulow . He held this office between January 1929 and his death on May 27 of the same year. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . After his death, John T. Grigsby was named as his successor.

His wife was Elizabeth (1877–1955), née Throckmorton. Both are buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Rapid City, South Dakota.
