Alma Larson

Alma Helen Larson (born May 21, 1932 in Vivian , South Dakota , † September 2, 2012 in Winner , South Dakota) was an American politician ( Republican Party ).

Career

Alma Helen Larson was born in 1932 to Darwin Inman Larson (1882-1950) and his wife Christine R. (1895-1961), nee Syvertsen, on a farm north of Vivian ( Lyman County ). She had three brothers, Edwin M. (1917–1944), Melvin Anton (1920–1996) and Olaf, and six sisters, Emma, ​​Laura, Clara, Gladys, Alice and Josephine. Larson was first baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Vivian . As a teenager, she was very shy and a quiet girl, but that all changed in high school where she participated in many extracurricular activities. Larson graduated from Vivian High School in 1951. Then she moved to Denver. She attended a vocational school there and then studied business and secretarial science. After graduating, she worked in Denver for an airline and a real estate agency.

At some point she moved back to South Dakota. In the following years she worked as an employee in the civil service. After Essie Wiedenman was elected Secretary of State of South Dakota in 1960 , Larson was appointed Deputy Secretary of State of South Dakota under him. Larson was elected the 22nd Secretary of State of South Dakota in 1964 and was re-elected three times, in 1966, 1968 and 1970. She served from 1965 to 1973.

After completing her final term, she founded a company called along with Janice Wolf Milady's Shoppe in Gregory ( Gregory County ) that they operated the next 22 years together.

Larson was active in her church, St. John Lutheran, and the local Commercial Club , but also played golf .

She died on September 2, 2012 at the Winner Regional Healthcare Center in Winner, Tripp County .
