Charles A. Burkhart

Charles A. Burkhart (born March 17, 1860 in Linn County , Iowa , † November 6, 1922 in Huges County , South Dakota ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ).

Career

Charles A. Burkhart was born in 1860 to John C. Burkhart (1833-1911) and his wife Anna Mary (1840-1924), née Albaugh, in Linn County. He had five siblings: George M. (1862–1863), Jessie May (1866–1949), Hubert E. (1872–1935), Grace Pearl (1878–1949) and Florence Queen (1881–1958). His childhood was overshadowed by the civil war.

On April 29, 1885, he married in Nevada (Iowa) his wife Miss Sadie E. Williams (1868-1943), daughter of Asa M. Williams (1841-1909) and Mary Ellen Cornell Williams (1840-1909). The couple had five children: Lester Waynard (1885–1935), Earl C. (* 1887), Blanche Claire (1889–1967), Ilo Ellen (1891–1981) and Lyle Randolph Burkhart (1898–1956).

From 1915 to 1918 he was a member of the South Dakota House of Representatives . His term of office was overshadowed by the First World War . In the 1918 election, he was elected Secretary of State of South Dakota - a post he held from 1919 until his death in 1922.

Burkhart was buried in the city cemetery in Zearing, Iowa, where other members of his family were also buried.
