Myrtle Morrison

Myrtle Alice Morrison (* 1885 in Vermillion , Dakota Territory , † January 17, 1938 in South Dakota ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ).

Career

Myrtle Alice Morrison was born in 1885 to John M. Morrison (1854-1940) and his wife Lucy (1851-1940), née Fox, in Vermillion ( Clay County ) and grew up there. She had two sisters named Maud (1883-1954) and Nellie (1887-1951). Myrtle graduated from Vermillion High School. She then went to the University of South Dakota . After graduation, she returned to Vermillion and took a job at a school.

She was elected County Auditor of Clay County for a two-year term in 1922 and re-elected in 1924. She held the post from 1923 to 1927. She then moved to Pierre ( Hughes County ). Morrison worked there for four years in the State Tax Commission, the first two years as Tax Statistician and the last two years as Secretary of the Tax Division. She was the first woman to hold the latter position. In the 1932 election, she was elected Secretary of State of South Dakota. She held the post from 1933 to 1937.

Morrison was buried in Saint Agnes Calvary Cemetery in Vermillion.
