- January 17 : A British army defeats the supporters of Mahdi Muhammad Ahmad in the battle of Abu Klea in Sudan .
- January 26 : The Mahdists capture the capital Khartoum , killing Governor Gordon Pasha . This ends the Turkish-Egyptian rule in Sudan .
- February 26th : In Berlin the Congo Act is passed by the Congo Conference which is ending .
- February 27 : The territorial claims of the Society for German Colonization (GfdK) in today's Tanzania , later German East Africa , are placed under the protection of the German Empire .
- March 11 : Gustav Nachtigal , Reich Commissioner for West Africa, places the Mahinland in what will later become Nigeria under German protection.
- June 20 : Emil Nagel signs a treaty with the rulers of Pondoland in South Africa to make it a German colony - the attempt fails because of British colonization efforts.
- September 30th : Bechuanaland on what is now Botswana becomes a British protectorate , to which Stellaland is incorporated.
