Albert Steeger

Albert Steeger (born November 1, 1885 in Lobberich ; † March 15, 1958 in Krefeld ) was a German polymath who wrote numerous geological, botanical, archaeological, linguistic, castle and settlement history works.

Steeger is considered to be the founder of archaeological castle research on the Lower Rhine. His contributions to the development of the peasant and rural settlements on the Lower Rhine and to the history and geography of the settlement give him an outstanding position and importance.

Life

Steeger grew up as the third of ten children in Lobberich. After attending primary school and two years of private tuition, he began his training at the teachers' college in Kempen . After the exam in 1905, he began teaching in Nieukerk , which was interrupted by a year of military service. After stints in Baerl and Meerbeck , his path led him to the Marianne Rhodius School in Krefeld in 1912 , which he took over in 1926. In 1923 he received his doctorate in geology from the University of Cologne . In 1936 he left school to take over the establishment of a local museum in Krefeld. The Lower Rhine Landscape Museum in what is now the Burg Linn Museum Center in Krefeld- Linn emerged from this. Steeger had already started systematic excavations in Gellep in 1934 and discovered the Roman-Franconian burial ground there in 1936. Until his death in 1958, Steeger had uncovered around 1200 graves here.

In 1945 he took over the management of all Krefeld museums and established a museum school in 1948, a long time before museum education became common.

In 1981 the district of Viersen published a volume with scientific work by Steeger. Hugo Borger portrays Steeger in it.
