- 44 BC BC : On the Ides of March , the Roman dictator Gaius Julius Caesar is murdered in an assassination attempt in the theater of Pompey in Rome . Under the leadership of Marcus Junius Brutus and Gaius Cassius Longinus , around 60 people took part in the conspiracy; about 20 are known by name today. The Senate granted the murderers amnesty on the same day.
