Philipp Mueller

Philipp Müller Pseudonym: Christian Sincerus , Bartholomäus Christian Richard (* August 24, 1640 in Sangerhausen ; † March 15, 1713 in Jena ) was a German Lutheran theologian.

Life

Philipp was the son of the superintendent of Sangerhausen Samuel Müller (born December 29, 1592 in Frauenstein near Freiberg / Saxony; † July 22, 1662 in Sangerhausen) and his wife Anna Maria Dörre (also: Dörer, Dorr, died July 22, 1604 in Blankenheim; c. September 8, 1689 in Sangerhausen). After initial training at his place of birth, he moved to the electoral Saxon state school in Pforta on May 1, 1651 , which was under the direction of Rector Johann Kühn (born June 2, 1603 in Delitzsch - May 3, 1680 in Naumburg). After he left this educational institution on February 9, 1657, he enrolled at the University of Jena on August 31, 1657 in order to study philosophy and theology.

In 1661 he acquired the degree of master's degree in philosophy and in the same year became an adjunct of the philosophical faculty. In 1662 he was a short time deacon at the Jakobikirche in Sangerhausen , in 1663 he became court preacher of Count Johann Georg von Mansfeld in Mansfeld and, at the end of 1664, pastor at the St. Andreas Church in Eisleben . Three months later, in March 1665, he accepted a call as professor of rhetoric and poetry at the University of Jena. Here he entered the theological faculty on July 10, 1672, defended his inaugural treatise under Johannes Musäus in April 1674 and received his doctorate in theology on January 26, 1675. In addition, he was then given an extraordinary theological professorship before taking up a new position in March 1679 as provost and prelate of the monastery of Our Dear Women in Magdeburg.

Here he campaigned for the restoration of the monastery property. Because he attacked the marriage of Duke Moritz Wilhelm of Saxony-Zeitz with the sister of the first King of Prussia Maria Amalia as inadmissible and rejected its legality, he was arrested for a year in the Spandau Citadel . Since many influential personalities had campaigned for his release, he went back to Jena, where he became a full professor of theology on December 8, 1701. He also received the title of Princely Saxon Church Council and became a senior at the university. As a university teacher at Salana, he also took part in the organizational tasks of the educational institution. He was dean of the philosophical and theological faculty and in the summer semesters 1669, 1679 and in the winter semester 1701 rector of the alma mater . Müller, who had been a foreign member of the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences since March 11, 1701 , died unmarried.
