The Jakobikirche is a Gothic hall church in Sangerhausen . During the transition in the GDR in 1989 , the large gatherings of the Sangerhausen citizens took place here.

History and building history

A previous building of today's church was first mentioned in 1271. This church was probably built with the layout of the new town as a market church. In 1457 an order was placed to erect the octagonal pillars that still exist today. It is likely that parts of the previous church and possibly also the floor plan were reused when the present church was built . The nave was completed in 1472, and the choir was completed between 1495 and 1510 . Finally, the west tower was built between 1514 and 1542. The tower's windows and sound holes were renewed in baroque shapes from 1711 to 1742 .

description

The nave consists of a three-aisled hall with five bays . It has a flat wooden ceiling, as the originally planned vault was never implemented. The baroque painting, which gives the nave a "living warmth", is characteristic of the nave. The pillars , arcade arches and window frames are painted with vine leaves , bud ornamentation and auricular work. There are also some figures of saints . In the nave there is a surrounding wooden gallery .

The wooden pulpit , designed in Renaissance forms , dates from 1593.

The long choir, the "most architecturally complex part of the church", is striking. The choir has a rich reticulated vault . It is separated from the nave by a pointed triumphal arch . The choir stalls and the carved altar from around 1400, a “conventional but quite good workshop work”, come from the church of the Augustinian Hermit Monastery, which was demolished in 1552 . The predella of the age dates from 1621. In 1670 the altar was painted in color. The tombs and epitaphs from the 17th and 18th centuries are also characteristic of the choir .

The tower of the church leans slightly to the west , because it was probably built on a raised moat. The tower is therefore also referred to as "Leaning Jacob". A special feature of the Jakobikirche is the moon clock attached to the east side of the tower. The height of the tower is 61 meters.

organ

Hildebrandt organ from 1728

The organ , which has a baroque front, was built by Zacharias Hildebrandt (Liebertwolkwitz) between 1726 and 1728 . At the beginning of the 19th century the bellows and wind chests were repaired and wear parts replaced. In 1852 the disposition was changed according to the musical taste of the time, in 1900 a sill was installed and the action pneumatized. When the roof structure of St. Jacobi caught fire in 1971, extinguishing water got into the organ, which was then largely unable to play. From 1976 the instrument was extensively restored by the company Eule Orgelbau and put back into service in 1978. The instrument has 30 stops on two manuals and a pedal .
