St. Andreas in Lutherstadt Eisleben (2014)

St. Andreas is a Protestant church in the Lutherstadt Eisleben . It is the largest church in the city and played an important role in the history of the Reformation .

meaning

St. Andrew's Church plays an important role in the history of the Reformation: until the 1530s, Roman Catholic services were celebrated here in the morning and Protestant services in the afternoon . Martin Luther had negotiated this solution with the Mansfeld Counts, who followed both denominations.

Luther delivered the last four sermons of his life from the pulpit in St. Andrew . The wooden pulpit from the early 16th century from which Martin Luther delivered his last sermons hangs on a pillar in the central nave and has since been called the "Luther pulpit". After his death, Luther's body was laid out in St. Andreas before he was transferred to Wittenberg .

Building history

The parish church in the old town of Eisleben was first mentioned in 1180. The extensive rebuilding of the church began in the 15th century with the choir , followed by the nave . The first floor of the tower followed by 1486. The superstructure of the towers with a double hood was built in 1714-23. The new building reflected the wealth of the citizens of Eisleben who became prosperous through mining . In 2011 renovation work was carried out on the long roof of the church. The current building is a late Gothic hall with a three-aisled choir and a twin tower in the west.

Furnishing

Luther pulpit with grisaille painting

The church furnishings come from the late Gothic and Renaissance periods.

The pulpit known today as the Luther pulpit was adapted precisely to the pillar in 1518. It is decorated with grisaille painting .

The former pulpit curtain of the Luther pulpit , which was made in the 16th century, can be seen in a showcase in the church . Its base consists of four liturgical vestments , so-called pluvials, which were discarded at the time . After the Reformation they were given a new purpose here. On the surface there are 30 scenes with approx. 38 cm high by 16 cm wide. Figures of saints and scenes from the life of Mary are shown. The images are sculptured, with pieces of linen fabric glued and stuffed one on top of the other , decorated with pearls and gold threads . In 1876 the pulpit curtain lost its liturgical function and has since been presented in a glass cabinet.

The carved altar is from the late Gothic period .

organ

Organ of St. Andreas (Eisleben)

The organ was built in the course of the church restoration in 1876/77 on the extended west gallery by the organ builder Wilhelm Rühlmann (Zörbig). In the years 1939–1941 the instrument was revised by the organ building company Wilhelm Sauer (Frankfurt / Oder); the originally mechanical action was converted to electropneumatics, the disposition was supplemented by 7 registers. The organ has 42 stops on three manual works and a pedal.
