Rino Tami

Rino Tami , alias Arturo Tami , (born August 7, 1908 in Monteggio ; † March 15, 1994 in Lugano ) was a Swiss architect . He is considered a pioneer of modern Ticino architecture.

biography

Rino Tami was born in 1908 as the son of Giuseppe Tami in the Lisora district of the municipality of Monteggio . He attended schools in Lugano and the higher architecture school in Rome . From 1934 to 1935 he studied architecture under Otto Rudolf Salvisberg at the ETH Zurich . In 1946 he married Eugénie Mousny (1911–2011). From 1957 to 1961 he was a professor at the ETH Zurich.

His first building was the Church del Sacro Cuore in Bellinzona in 1936 . Of his later work, the Ticino canton library in Lugano from 1940, the Usego warehouse in Bironico from 1950 and the headquarters of the Ticino radio company in Lugano from 1964 should be mentioned in particular . He realized some projects together with his brother Carlo Tami (1898–1993), who had studied at the Accademia di Brera after completing an apprenticeship as a bricklayer .

From 1960 to 1983 Tami worked as an architectural consultant for the construction of the national roads in the canton of Ticino. Above all, he created the imposing portals of the A 2 motorway tunnels near Melide and on the Gotthard .
