The village is located south of Monte Ceneri at 468 m above sea level. M. on the right bank of the Vedeggio .

history

Bironico was first mentioned in 1205 as in castello loci Bironici . The name probably means "among the people of Birro (Birrius)". The place probably formed the center of the middle and upper Vedeggio valley in the High Middle Ages . The region was first dependent on the diocese of Como and later on the city of Como until the Rusca, a noble family from Como, settled in Bironico in the 13th century. The Rusca and the Archbishop of Milan had tithe rights there. In the first half of the 15th century, the village had to provide 19 soldiers to the Duke of Milan .

After the conquest by the Confederates , the envoys of the federal places used to meet in Bironico to control the bailiffs of the Ennetbirgischen bailiwicks .

On November 25, 2007, the merger of five of the seven municipalities in the Vedeggio Valley was approved by the voters: Bironico, Camignolo , Medeglia , Rivera and Sigirino . Two municipalities, Isone and Mezzovico-Vira , rejected the merger. As a result, the State Council refrained from asking the Grand Council a compulsory merger of the two negative municipalities. Monteceneri was therefore only formed from the five consenting municipalities.
