Gravesano is a municipality in the Taverne district , in the Lugano district of the canton of Ticino in Switzerland .

geography

The municipality is located in the middle section of the Valle del Vedeggio (Vedeggio Valley) on its western valley flank. The now canalized Vedeggio , which previously marked the eastern municipal boundary, no longer runs on the municipal territory. The western border runs on the slope of Monte Ferraro , while the southern and northern borders are largely formed by two smaller streams.

The former hamlet of Grumo has now grown together with Gravesano and forms its own quarter. He gave the name to a medieval castle district, which probably included Gravesano, Manno and Bedano.

history

The village was first mentioned in 1254 as de Gravaxana . The castle on the road from Ponte Tresa TI on Monte Ceneri housed King Henry II (HRR) and later also Frederick I (HRR) Barbarossa on his journey to Italy in 1162. In Gravesano goods and rights of the monastery of San Pietro are in Ciel d'Oro of Pavia and the Bishop of Como .
