history

The village is mentioned for the first time in 818 under the then name ad Tresiae Pontem . According to tradition, a Roman road to Raetia passed by Ponte Tresa; from the earliest times it was a well-known commercial and military transit point. The Lombards are said to have been defeated there by the Franks in 590 . Another battle took place in 1126 during the Ten Years' War between Como and Milan near the Tresa Bridge. In 1478 the Count GB dell'Anguillara concentrated the Duke's troops for the Giornico War near Ponte Tresa. On May 9, 1517, the treaty was signed in Ponte Tresa, after which Stabio and the rest of the Mendrisiotto became Swiss, against Domodossola's assignment .

From 1885 to 1950 (electrified in 1918) a narrow-gauge railway connected Ponte Tresa with Luino on Lake Maggiore .
