The Tresa (German outdated: Treis ) is a river in the Italian region of Lombardy and in the canton of Ticino .
geography
It flows out of Lake Lugano at Ponte Tresa at an altitude of 271 m and forms the border between the Swiss canton of Ticino and Italy for over half its length . After around 15 km, it flows into Lake Maggiore at an altitude of 193 m between Luino and Germignaga .
history
As the only outflow of a 561 km² catchment area, the Tresa, like Lake Lugano, is subject to very considerable floods, the most important of which occurred in 1868 and 1896 (water level at the Ponte Tresa gauge 2.56 and 2.83 m, respectively). A real correction of the Tresa including regulation of the lake runoff took place in 1963.
The Tresa was very rich in fish and was home to numerous eels, the catch of which various residents earn their lives.
