history

A Roman settlement is proven with finds from the 3rd century AD.

In the Middle Ages , a small town developed which was the regional center for the hinterland and gained a certain importance through shipping. In turn, Luino was administered by influential families from Milan and Como . From 1512-1515 it was subject to the Confederates who had briefly conquered the area during their Milan campaigns. After the defeat in the Battle of Marignano , it came under the rule of France. In 1541, Charles V granted the city market rights and thus laid the foundation for the weekly market that is widely known to tourists.

In 1848 Giuseppe Garibaldi tried with a coup d'état to drive the Austrian occupiers out of Luino - in memory of this attempt, the Luinesi erected the first monument on Italian soil to their freedom hero in 1867. In 1861 the Austrian rule was replaced with the Risorgimento and Italy created its own national state.

The government of the newly founded nation state tried to pursue its own economic policy and pursued this goal with appropriate import regulations and customs regulations.

Textile industry in Luino

The textile industry, which is in Swiss hands, has created over 1,000 jobs since 1868. It supplied sales markets all over the world with its products. The favorable environment with a secure energy supply, recruiting opportunities for workers in the region and the connection to the public transport network contributed to the success of this development.

In order to create good conditions for the education of the children of the management employees from German-speaking Switzerland , the Swiss school Luino was founded in 1883

Luino and the Gotthard Railway

The original Gotthard Railway project envisaged a connection to the Italian route network near Novara and should run along the shores of Lake Maggiore. Due to the intervention of the Swiss Confederation, together with the metropolis of Milan, the Ceneri variant was subsequently given preference and the line opened in Milan in June 1882. The variant via Luino was also built and inaugurated just six months later in the same year. The imposing station building, built according to the plans of Giovanni Faini, and the generous track systems still remind us today that the international line Berlin - Genoa was once planned here. From 1885 to 1950 a narrow-gauge railway connected Luino with Lavena Ponte Tresa with a continuation from Ponte Tresa to Lugano .

Developments over time

In 1906 the Simplon line was put into operation and the Luino border station lost its importance. The closure of the rail link during the First World War ushered in the decline of the prosperous community. Although the village is located in Italy, Luino gained fame throughout Switzerland thanks to the railway connection from Giubiasco to the Gotthard Railway . From 1885 to 1950 (electrified in 1918) a narrow-gauge railway connected Luino with Ponte Tresa on Lake Lugano .
