Piero Chiara (born March 23, 1913 in Luino , † December 31, 1986 in Varese ) was an Italian writer .

Life

Chiara studied law, occasionally worked as a photographer and came to France looking for work. For many years he worked in different parts of Italy as a judicial officer and in the financial administration. In 1943 he was convicted by a fascist court of “ subversive activity” and fled to Switzerland . Here he taught at the Italian Lyceum in Zug .

After the war he worked as a journalist and translator. In 1958 Chiara published two stories in the magazine Gaffe , which he processed into the humorous novel about life in a small Lombard town called II piatto piange (about: The Weeping Plate), which was published in 1962 . The echo encouraged him to keep writing. Two years later, The Division was released and soon became a huge success, also as a film under the title Sisters Share Everything . A book about Sicily published in 1965 , which has autobiographical features, received the Charles Veillon Prize . In addition to his writing activities, Chiara has also emerged as the editor of anthologies and classical works.

In honor of Piero Chiara, the Premio Chiara literary prize was established after his death and has been awarded annually since 1989.
