Joachim Schmettau (born February 5, 1937 in Bad Doberan ) is a German sculptor .

Life

Schmettau has lived in Berlin since 1945 . From 1956 to 1960 he studied at the then Hochschule der Künste in Berlin, graduating as a master class student with Professor Ludwig G. Schrieber in 1961. Between 1964 and 1990, Joachim Schmettau took part in a total of 18 major annual DKB exhibitions as a member of the German Association of Artists . In 1972 he was a founding member of the aspect of the Berlin Critical Realists group .

From 1971 to 2002 Schmettau was a professor at what is now the University of the Arts in Berlin.

His first works are in sandstone as well as plaster of paris and stucco. In the 1960s he began to combine different materials (bronze, glass) and extremely smooth the surface. Figurative and geometric elements were combined so that the work as a whole appears to be driven to an intensive stylization.

The work for public spaces is also extensive (facade reliefs, fountains, etc.). His best-known work is the "Erdkugelbrunnen" completed in 1984 on Breitscheidplatz in Berlin-Charlottenburg , also called the " Weltkugelbrunnen " or "Wasserklops".
