Globe fountain

The Weltkugelbrunnen (also known in literature as the Schmettau fountain and popularly known as the Wasserklops ) is a water feature right in front of the Europa Center on Berlin's Breitscheidplatz .
layout
The facility was built in 1983 and opened on August 12, 1983.
The Berlin sculptor Joachim Schmettau previously won the open competition for the design of the fountain and its bronze figures . He carried out the work with his sculptor colleague Susanne Wehland .
The main part of the complex consists of several hewn blocks of red granite , which together form an approximately hemispherical base with a total diameter of 8.5 meters and are arranged in a water basin 16 meters in diameter. There are numerous fountains , water fountains and other water features on them. Characters from different cultures are embedded in the symbolic globe.
The large water basin is surrounded by stairs that lead from Breitscheidplatz into the basement of the Europa Center. The bronze watercourse with the five scenes of mountains, alpine pastures, urban landscape, garbage dump and mermaids is inserted into the south-eastern flight of stairs . To the north of the main basin, about 15 m away, is the small fountain , which is also part of the complex, with a bronze figure playing with a puppet .
The overall planning for the renewal of the square was carried out by the architects Ivan Krusnik and Oskar Reith .
Maintenance costs
Operating the fountain for five months a year costs the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district around 75,000 euros. Since the district is unable to bear these costs, the well is dependent on the help of sponsors. From 1996 to 2001, the City Working Group financed the fountain, and in 2004 the operator of the adjacent Europe Center donated 45,000 euros.
