There are two definitions of vernacular:
- the "oral tradition living among the people"; JG Herder also coined the expression folk poetry as the entirety of popular literary and oral traditions and includes folk songs , stories, folk tales , but also proverbs , nursery rhymes , peasant rules and the like;
- the “popular language use”, the everyday language or colloquial language in contrast to the scientific language use, is also out of date for the vernacular , a word that can also stand for dialect .
