The Staatliche Kunsthalle Berlin was located in the Bikini House on Budapester Strasse

The Staatliche Kunsthalle Berlin was from 1977 to 1993 an exhibition hall in Berlin City West in the former district of Charlottenburg .

history

The Staatliche Kunsthalle Berlin was founded in 1977 in West Berlin as an institution of the State of Berlin. In contrast to numerous museums in the city, it was not part of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation . Unlike institutions with similar names in Hamburg , Bremen or Karlsruhe , it was designed as a pure exhibition space without its own collection. Rented rooms in the Bikini House on Budapester Strasse , opposite the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, served as the location .

The founding director Dieter Ruckhaberle , who had previously campaigned for the Künstlerhaus Bethanien and the rescue of the Martin-Gropius-Bau as an exhibition venue in the city, played a key role in the establishment of the Kunsthalle . Ruckhaberle was a painter himself and well connected in the Berlin art scene. Accordingly, in addition to various other exhibitions, he also repeatedly showed works by contemporary Berlin artists in the Staatliche Kunsthalle Berlin. This earned him repeated criticism; Camilla Blechen wrote in the FAZ of "a long series of courtesy exhibitions with which the Berlin painter Dieter Ruckhaberle, as head of the State Art Gallery, petted friendly parts of the local scene". Others praised the exhibition program, such as Hermann Raum in New Germany . After the German reunification and the associated reduction of subsidies of the Federal Land Berlin Berlin Culture Senator responded Ulrich Roloff-Momin early 1990s with the closure of a number of cultural institutions, including the theater of the Freie Volksbühne , the Schiller Theater , the Metropolitan Theater and last but not least the Staatliche Kunsthalle Berlin, which was closed at the end of 1993. The circumstances of the closure and the recall of Ruckhaberle was a topic in the Berlin and national press for several months.

After the closure of the Staatliche Kunsthalle Berlin, there were repeated attempts to re-establish such an exhibition space in Berlin. From 2008 to 2010 there was the Temporary Art Gallery Berlin on Berlin's Schloßplatz . The governing mayor Klaus Wowereit in particular wanted a new art hall around 2010, which ultimately failed for financial reasons.
