The 23rd Söngvakeppnin took place from January 25, 2013 to February 2, 2013 and was the Icelandic preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 in Malmö , Sweden .

The competition was won by Eyþór Ingi Gunnlaugsson with his song Ég á líf . It was the first contribution sung in Icelandic since 1997 .

format

concept

Unlike in the previous year, in 2013 only 12 instead of 15 participants took part in the program. There were also only two semi-finals instead of three. Six participants took part in each semi-final, three of which qualify for the final. However, RÚV retained the right to award a wildcard for the final. Accordingly, seven participants took part in the final, of which the two best reached the newly introduced superfinal. There, unlike in the semi-finals and the final, only the televoting determined the winner. In all other parts of the broadcast, 50% of the results are decided by a jury and 50% by televoting.

There was also the rule that the songs in the semifinals had to be performed in Icelandic . In the final, the performers can decide for themselves whether they want to present their song in Icelandic or English .

Choice of contribution

From September 11, 2012 to October 8, 2012, contributions could be submitted to RÚV. Foreign composers could also submit their songs, but had to work with an Icelandic composer.

On November 12, 2012, RÚV presented the 12 participants. It was also announced that 240 songs were submitted in 2012.
